Phil Harrison of somy online entertainment was apparently shocked that a Sony paid interviewer would ask if he though that user of the new PS3 Home service would be used to distribute porn. At this point I think that any new use of the PS3 would be a welcome addition.

Q: In terms of some of the actions you can do within the world, presumably there’s no adult content there?

PH: Well, it’s absolutely deliberate that there is no physical impact between characters, between avatars. We are going to have animations that will allow you to shake somebody’s hand or to have some social touch but in a very, you know, appropriate way. But no, we’re not going to have ‘those’ kind of animations that I’m imagining that you’re thinking about.

Q: What about uploading porn from your PS3’s hard-disk to your private space? And maybe inviting people you don’t necessarily know back and them being slightly offended by what they see, then going to a moderator?

PH: Well I’m disappointed that you would use those as the first questions. I think Home should be used for a much wider and more beneficial scope than that, but I think that people can express their creativity inside Home in a wide variety of ways and it’s not necessarily for us to dictate what that should be. However, if somebody feels uncomfortable about an encounter on Home, it’s very easy for them to ban that person from their friends list…

RYU’S FORM SITE is a great tribute site for the artist RYU. I assume that he is japanese by the look at the works and subject matter. I enjoy the simplicity of the design while still maintaining interesting and attractive color choices. So I’m a little late to the party with this one but it’s worth the mention. I have a PS2, it is no longer plugged in because it has no HD out and the hardware was dated when it was released. This video may act as a record of the best this that was released on this console during its life. Poser has time and time again proven to be a simple, yet powerful tool in the world of 3d porn creation. Its versatile nature has been exposed through a bevy of high quality custom content created by a venerable army of hobbyists and artisans. But in its strength is also its weakness.

Because of its ease of use and humble production beginnings, Poser lacks the true flexibility of a production grade tool.  Areas such as light and camera control, animation exporting capability and advanced animation tools for key framing or soft body dynamics limit its use in a longer form animation pipeline. If this shortcoming will be addressed in future versions (the current version is 7) is unknown. 

Until that time, quality 3D animation production lies most firmly in a combination of higher-end tools such as Maya and studio max both currently owned by the same company. In order to create working soft body and cloth dynamics the poser content must be individually exported using standard OBJ or DXF formats and converted to a manageable polygonal mesh.  The converted mesh must then not exceed the memory allotment in the import program in its chosen method of use.  One example would be a scene that features a fully clothed figure that is disrobed by another fully clothed figure.  If the underlying mesh of each figure will be featured in the nude, then management of both the underlying nude figures and the overlay clothing mesh object must be budgeted as well as the memory requirements of the dynamic computation which will be calculated using the mesh data objects that are being provided.
